Howell and Alison’s story

We want to do the things we enjoy

Howell and Alison, from Welwyn Garden, like keeping themselves busy. Howell windsurfs and cycles, whereas Alison sings in a choir and loves playing golf. Busy lifestyles such as theirs can be chaotic, but having a financial plan in place eases much of the stress they feel about money.

Howell and Alison both have different attitudes towards money. Howell gladly stars as the spender. He says that he doesn’t “know how to spell the word budget,” whereas Alison is happy being the saver, working behind the scenes to help keep control of their financial situation. “Sorting out money and financial details falls to me,” she says.

Both agree that taking control of their finances became necessary when they were in their 30s, as their situation became too haphazard to handle. Their money was in different pots with different providers, and with no financial plan in place, their lives had become stressful. That’s when they first sought the help of a Tilney financial planner, who helped them consolidate their finances into one place.

Howell remembers the difference in his parents when their financial situation became more comfortable. As they became better off, he saw how an improved financial situation could ease stress. Having the ability to live your life free of financial worry isn’t necessarily about being really wealthy – it’s about being in control.

No big plans to change the world

What about the future? Howell envisages a steady ease into retirement because he still loves what he does – running his management development business. “It’s what I was born to do,” he says. “I don’t know where I’ll get my intellectual stimulation from post-retirement – although I know I’d quite like to do a degree in four to five years.”

Alison says that they don’t have a bucket list or any grand plans to change the world. She can see them travelling more, even if that just means exploring the UK. Over everything else, they both want to continue doing what they enjoy doing.

Howell believes that financial planning rescued them from chaos.

They know that through effective financial planning, they can achieve these goals and more – it provides freedom. Howell believes that it rescued them from chaos and gave them a better overview of everything. They didn’t know what their situation looked like before, with money in different pots. But now, they can see an overview of their finances on just one or two pieces of paper.

Freedom and choice to carry on doing what you enjoy

Howell and Alison enjoy the relationship with their Tilney financial planner because Tilney understands that plans change depending on what stage of life you’re at. As Howell says, throughout his life, questions and priorities have changed, but with Tilney they’ve had a sense of reassurance alongside them. Howell and Alison both agree: “we regard Tilney as friends of the family. With Tilney, you’re not on your own and somebody is keeping an eye on you.”
